Beat Cape Town Power Cuts: Load Shedding Friendly Activities To Try This Season

While load shedding may be a strangely accepted part of life in this beautiful city, there’s no reason to let it cast a shadow on your trip. Cape Town is a destination that promises travellers an unforgettable experience despite an occasional power outage. So, pack your sense of adventure, leave your worries behind and join us here at The O’Two Hotel as we show you how to make the most of your Cape Town journey. In the Mother City, there’s always something incredible to see and do even when the power is out!

1. Dine

In Cape Town, we’re well known for our outstanding dining experiences. Going to a restaurant is always a treat! But there’s nothing more frustrating than dining in the dark with a limited menu. Luckily, there are plenty of eateries that aren’t affected by load shedding and operate as normal.

Whether you’re drawn to the chic ambiance of rooftop bars or prefer the cosy nostalgia of an old-school pub, our city’s vibrant restaurants have something for everyone. Brighten those load shedding hours with a well-crafted cocktail in hand. What could be better?

Here are some of our top picks to turn those dark moments into memorable nights: Tjing Tjing Rooftop Bar, Ariel Modern Italian and Grand Pavilion. Be sure to check them out during your stay!

2. Watch

Looking to do something a bit different? Visit the Labia Theatre on Orange Street. This theatre is the oldest independent art-repertory cinema in South Africa (having opened in 1949) and offers a truly unique experience.

The Labia shows the best of circuit, independent movies, foreign films, documentaries, classics and art circuit films and also hosts some awesome events. Check out their website for their current movie times and pre book your tickets.  Enjoy a glass of wine or a beer on the outside terrace under the fairy lights or sip on a cocktail slush while watching the movie.

Standard tickets are R70 but they also run daily specials for two. Perfect for a romantic date night!

3. Tan

A trip to any one of our exquisite beaches is an activity that we can GUARANTEE is safe from load shedding. We may not always have electricity but this time of year we (almost) always have sunshine! Whether you choose to let the warm rays kiss your skin while tanning on the sand or take a refreshing dunk in the chilly waters, our beaches provide a welcomed distraction from any load shedding woes. Camps Bay Beach, Noordhoek Beach and, of course, visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach are on the top of our list of favourites!

4. Hike

In the same vein, hiking is also a great way to embrace nature and escape the power cuts! When load shedding strikes Cape Town, there’s no better way to embrace the situation than by heading outdoors. Cape Town boasts a treasure trove of scenic hiking trails that are not only load shedding-proof but also offer a welcome distraction from any of life’s stressors.

Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and the lush forests of Newlands are some of the best hiking spots in the city. As you climb to the summit of these natural wonders, you’ll leave behind the worries of electricity loss and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Cape Town’s landscapes. The panoramic views from these peaks are a reminder that even when the lights go out, nature continues to shine.

Don’t Be Discouraged

While load shedding can be annoying, don’t let it discourage you from booking your next stay in Cape Town. There’s an abundance of activities to keep you busy day or night in this remarkable city (Thank goodness for generators!).

At the end of the day, the power of discovery and exploration will always shine brighter than any temporary blackout.
